Mr. Shields is ecstatic about joining the Equitas team in the Fall of 2018. He was drawn to Equitas because of the institution’s focus on community and academic goals-- specifically their preparation for college and beyond. He joined the educational world to help create community among scholars and cultivate a culture of inquiry. He firmly believes that every student has the right to attend college and that it is the educator's responsibility to prepare them for that journey. He will be teaching 8th-grade nonfiction which includes both social science and science. Prior to joining Equitas, Mr. Shields has worked in various school settings including managing after-school programs and directing summer camps. Through these roles, he was able to foster academic growth in students through enrichment and STEM programs. He has also been student and substitute teaching in junior high classes for the last year. He completed his Bachelor’s of Arts in History at California State University Stanislaus and received his teaching credential at Biola University. He spends most of his extra time running, biking, reading, gardening and researching the history of denim. He is looking forward to meeting and getting to know all of the scholars and their families.
